What does it mean when a BMW 5 speed is stuck in neutral?

I'm thinking of buying a used bmw that is stuck in neutral. What might this be? Its a 5 speed manual.|||the problem in the gear box better you don't buy that car|||I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say maybe the transmission or a linkage issue.
