Why are the dynamics of a typical BMW so difficult to emulate by other manufacturers ?

I was thinking if a Japanese firm could produce a car as good to drive as a BMW, combined with their reputation for reliability, surely they would have a world-beater on their hands ? Every challenger to the 3 series, for example, seems to fall short when it comes to the drive / feel / dynamics. What makes a BMW so unique ?|||patents|||BMW focuses on good handling more than a soft ride. Lexus puts more effort into a soft comfortable ride. There is no reason why they couldn't do the other except it goes against the image they want to project and that they have a lot more experience in doing their chosen one. BMW wants to be sporty. Lexus wants to be cushy.

BMW also uses a lot of ball joint connections in their suspension which transfers a lot more road information than a bushing which is meant to isolate things and what Lexus uses.

Infiniti seems to put more focus on handling than the other Japanese brands.|||Personally after having driven many different cars, I have found your premise about BMW handling and driving insubstantial and just born of a previous reputation that is no longer justified.

In other words they are no better than many including some Japs so your question is thus unanswerable as they are not unique at all.|||BMW use rear wheel drive most others front wheel drive that is the difference|||Weight distribution is a big factor. BMW, better than any other, nears 50/50 F/R on many of their cars.
