I am about to buy a BMW M5 with manual transmission and I was wondering if it is possible to convert it from manual to auto or automanual? If so, where can I get it done? How much will it cost?|||Harley guy has no f*cking idea what he's talking about. It can be done, but it would cost an insane amount of money. The base e39 transmission does not mount up to the S62 V8 in the M5, so it would need custom adapters to fit, a custom driveshaft would be needed, and adapters like the Guibo disc would need to be modified to work along with the driveshaft. At the very least you're looking at $1000 for a used e39 tranny w/o shipping, custom driveshafts can be had for around $500, custom fit guibo $?, all the interior mods (auto shift knob, computers, etc...), and then the labor involved. A project like that could easily reach over $5000. Not worth it IMO. The M5 is a true sports car, it wasn't meant to get a granny tranny...
***Thanks for the thumbs down :)
This has been discussed on the forums hundreds of times, I know what I'm talking about here.|||Ryan, you're friggin brilliant. . . .
As for you the questioner, the BMW Mafia would find you and burn you at the stake, and probably not even get prosecuted because they would make a brilliant case as to how you ruined one of the most beloved BMW's of all time.
As for your question, just get a 540i with an automatic and upgrade to an M5 appearance package hell or get a 525/528/530 and upgrade. . . That is what most people do, hell you might even find one for sale with the appearance package already completed|||What year? Next question put the year.
The older better M5 BMWs 85 to 88 It can be done but the wiring needed would double the job. If you were going from AUTO to STICK it can be done quick and clean.
The NEW junk M5's, automatics never have been offered. So far as I have seen and read. BUT this is possible, I think the other BMWs of that year that are v8's can bolt up to the car. BUT the wiring and computer work alone would be silly to even go that way. Yes it can be done but man you really really have to want this. $$$$$$$$$$$. It cost bank.|||get the e60 if you want an automatic (or find a rare e34 alpina) To switch an e39 m5 to an automatic would cost an insane amount of money - I'd venture at the least over 5k without even including the labor. Not to mention you would destroy the resale value because anyone buying an e39 m5 expects the 6spd.|||NO, and if you are after a performance series BMW (m series) that would be not be a wise thing to do in any event....and certainly would lessen the value of the car.
If you just want the bmw for posing purchase any 5 series with an auto transmission and save some money....or do what most bmw posers do, purchase a later model 3 series 2 dr. coupe or vert. with an autobox.
regards|||One of the worst ideas I have ever heard.
You are defeating the purpose of this car. Why in the world would you do it? You need to stay away from BMW's period and somebody should arrest you before you make an abomination out of one of the best cars in the world.|||NO don't do it, you'll completely screw up your tranny!!! My M5 has the SMG, so you can switch it between manual and automatic. If you get the SMG you could switch it around|||auto manual ? Get this its alot better then the other 2 transmissions. $ 500.00 Complete installation. Get it done before its to late.
